Hi I’m Jack.
For the better part of the last two decades, I've called myself a climber.
Climbing’s been the thing that's had the most profoundly positive influence on my life so far. From the motivation to live a healthy lifestyle, to the friendships made, communities, travel, fulfilment, finding purpose – you name it; climbing has facilitated it all.
The only thing better than experiencing all that firsthand it seems, is sharing it with others.
If you look at almost all the climbing related things I've chosen to pursue, from my early years of guiding, through to coaching, route setting, gym management, running setting clinics or most recently, creating climbing holds, the common thread, all the way through, is sharing some of the magic I've managed to find through my own climbing with other people.
Chances are if you're here reading this, I don't need to tell you how or why climbing is amazing, because you've almost certainly experienced it for yourself. If you froth climbing, coaching, setting, the outdoors or just the climbing scene in general, then we've got something in common! Let's work together!
WHAT I DO
Route Setting
I first picked up an impact driver when I was given an opportunity to set at 9 Degrees Alexandria in 2016. Fast forward to 2024 and I'm still working for 9 Degrees, only now as the facility manager and head route setter at our flagship Waterloo gym located in inner Sydney.
During that time, I've had a front row seat to the crazy growth in the Sydney gym scene and to the whirlwind evolution of route setting here that's come along with it.
The vast majority of my setting work has been commercial setting locally for 9 degrees but I've also been fortunate enough to do my fair share of guest sets, travelling, clinics and setting competitions over the years - not to mention having brought over or had in many talented setters from other gyms and places around the world.
Almost a decade into setting, I'm still finding things to get excited about, learning new ways to approach or to think about the craft and finding things to implement into the setting program or to my clinic content.
One of my goals for the next few years is to travel more, to connect with setters from all over and to froth (an Aussie term for getting excited) with other people about setting and climbing!
PODCAST
Climbing Curated
In April 2022, I started Climbing Curated, a podcast about route setting specifically for route setters. At that point in time, I remember I'd absorbed every possible piece of podcast material about route setting or that featured a route setter that I could find on Spotify and still wanted more. With route setting being such a niche interest, it was a real struggle to find people to have meaningful discussions with about setting, and the subsequent realisation that there wasn't even a single podcast dedicated to creating route setting content was what ultimately led to Climbing Curated's inception.
As of right now, we're currently 24 episodes in and counting. I'm pretty proud to have contributed a setting resource like Climbing Curated that now has close to 50 hours of setting content for people to consume at the touch of a button - completely free of charge.
On average, I've been releasing about one episode a month since the podcast started and I'd love to keep up that kind of frequency for as long as it doesn't feel as though it's becoming a chore. I think one of the things that makes the pod what it is, is that it's the result of authentic curiosity and interest, and I'd like to keep it that way!
CLIMBING HOLDS
Motif Climbing Grips
In early 2022 I was approached about an opportunity to come on board as a partner in a new project. It was a project and an opportunity, that at the time sounded too good to be true – little did I know just what I was signing myself up for and how much time, effort and energy it would take just to get that project off the ground! Finally after much hard work and a sizeable investment, approximately two years later, we've officially launched Motif Climbing Grips, a Sydney based climbing hold company, which is backed by a combined two decades plus of climbing industry knowledge and a whole lot of passion.
We're super proud of our inaugural hold sets and are excited to keep building on those offerings by both expanding on those initial sets and by adding more lines to the existing range.
Over the years, I've developed a route setting philosophy that is most easily summarised as committing to the goal of creating 'coachable' boulders for the customers in our facilities. That is, boulders that will facilitate a persons continued progression as a climber. As the person providing creative direction for the holds at Motif, I went out of my way to ensure that as well as ticking all the essential boxes for good hold design like ensuring ergonomic holding surfaces, having directional shapes, aesthetic design and providing versatility for route setters – we also stayed true to the idea of giving setters the tools to create coachable movement.
THOUGHTS
Blog
After close to a decade of route setting and gym management, attending multiple clinics, running some clinics myself and hosting a podcast, it would be fair to say I've immersed myself in pretty deeply in the climbing industry.
While one of my ongoing goals is to stay curious and open minded, that certainly doesn't mean I don't have some opinions or thoughts of my own, a few of which I've taken the time to share in the form of a blog you can find over on the Motif website. If you want to read some of my recent ramblings, head over there and check them out!
